Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS) is excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans. Throughout the division, schools are hosting a variety of activities to educate and engage students in recognizing the significance of this national celebration.
At Yowell Elementary, Mrs. Hoover's students are leading the way with daily "Hispanic Heritage Month Fact of the Day" videos. These students record themselves sharing interesting facts, which are then broadcast each morning as part of the school’s news announcements. Mrs. Rozwadowski’s students are contributing by creating a vibrant mural celebrating Hispanic heritage, showcasing the art and history of Hispanic cultures.
Emerald Hill Elementary is taking an immersive approach. Murals and displays highlighting Hispanic contributions adorn the walls, while the entrance display case has been transformed to feature Hispanic heritage artifacts. Teachers are encouraged to take their classes on brief “in-school field trips” to explore these displays. Additionally, staff received an email with links to free, age-appropriate activities that can be incorporated into the curriculum. Student-created videos from across the district are also shared on the morning announcements, further enriching the school's celebration.
At Culpeper Middle School, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated with videos on the morning announcements, as well as streams of influential Hispanic figures on cafeteria TVs. The Student Council Association (SCA), with the help of World Language teachers, is hosting a Spirit Week from September 23rd to September 27th, celebrating Hispanic cultures through themed days. In addition, Mrs. Smay, the World Language teacher, is working to organize a community dinner, emphasizing the importance of togetherness during this month.
At Floyd T. Binns Middle School, morning announcements feature videos honoring influential Hispanic figures. The school is decorated with murals and posters, including a large Hispanic Heritage Month poster on the balcony over the main entrance. Teachers are participating in a door decorating contest, with each class designing the lower half of their door in celebration of Hispanic heritage. A special Hispanic Heritage Month meal will be offered in October.
Finally, Culpeper County High School will host a Hispanic Heritage Month assembly on Friday, October 4. This assembly will offer students an opportunity to engage with and learn about the significant contributions of Hispanic figures throughout history.
CCPS is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment where students from all backgrounds are celebrated, and Hispanic Heritage Month provides a unique opportunity to emphasize the importance of diversity in our schools.
